Norte Abierto is a mining project located in the Atacama Region which was founded in 2017, after the fusion of Cerro Casale and Caspiche. In these deposits, located in the commune of Tierra Amarilla, at more than 4 thousand meters above the sea level, we will work in the large scale extraction of gold and copper contained in the Maricunga belt.
One of the objectives of Norte Abierto is to become a real contribution to the development of the Atacama Region and local communities through the sustainable development of its activities at all stages.
According to the information gathered to date, Norte Abierto has the following reserves and combined geological resources:
Proven and probable gold reserves of 23,2 million ounces based on the 100 % and measured and indicated resources for 26,6 additional million ounces.
Proven and probable copper reserves of 5,8 billion pounds and measures and indicated resources of 6,7 billion pounds.
First explorations of the zone started in the mid 80’s.
For 2018, Norte Abierto is focusing its work on the development of activities that will determine how the exploitation of the deposits of Cerro Casale and Caspiche can be viable on a single mining Project.
To do this, the project is working on three main objectives for the development of Norte Abierto:
Update of the Cerro Casale and Caspiche geological models, through drilling campaigns to confirm and increase the geological confidence of these deposits.
Engineering studies to determine key aspects such as power supply, as well as an analysis about mining and metallurgical model. These results will be the baseline of the pre-feasibility study for the future unified and optimized project.
Development of the sustainability strategy, which includes the management of environmental permits, as the beginning of the social and environmental baseline studies. Also, the company initiated an early engagement process with the community and various social actors and authorities in the Atacama Region.
Norte Abierto is a Company that was born from a joint venture between Canadian Mining Companies Goldcorp and Barrick Gold. Both own equal parts of the Project, which is the result of two previous initiatives: Cerro Casale and Caspiche, deposits separated by 12 kilometers.
The project has a strong commitment to the Atacama Region through a policy of sustainable value creation and transparent long-term relationships, all of which are based on the demanding environmental and social commitments of both companies. Norte Abierto is led by Goldcorp.
